A personal message from Nick Bolton,
Founder & CEO of Synergy Si, Inc.
I have realized that our little project needs to grow up. This is why I have made the decision to charge $4.99 to download Synergy. It turns out that given the option, only 0.002% will choose to donate, which just isn't enough to fund the team size required to maintain the program.
Synergy is still open source and "free as in free speech" (to quote Richard Stallman), except that now there's a one-time fee to download the software. This will give you an account which will last forever, giving you lifetime download access for all new versions of Synergy. As with all GNU licensed software, you are free to run the program, change the program, and redistribute the program with or without changes.
Many of our users who have been around since the start will probably consider reaching out to me to share views about charging a fee for open source software. If you're considering this, please first read the GNU page on selling free software which is very interesting and very well written--and yes, we will donate to the Free Software Foundation.
Thanks for your understanding. I hope you decide to buy Synergy and support the development of open source software.
